Shahlem Groover, 45, was pulled over in a gray 1999 Buick Park Avenue with an expired license plate in the 5800 block of Morton Street around 10 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, Philadelphia police said.
Officers noted Groover appeared nervous and had leaned toward the passenger side before stopping. While his registration matched the vehicle, the displayed license plate did not, authorities said.
Groover requested to exit the car to check the plate himself but then began sidestepping away. Officers attempted a safety check, noticing the glove compartment was locked. When asked to open it, Groover refused, rolled up the windows, locked the doors, and fled, police said.
The chase ended on the 300 block of Mechanic Street when Groover stopped, exited the vehicle, and ran. During the foot pursuit, he stumbled, revealing he was holding a firearm, police said. When an officer caught up, Groover turned and fired a shot, missing the officer, before discarding the weapon, authorities said.
After a struggle, Groover was taken into custody. Officers later found multiple packets of narcotics in his vehicle, police said.
Groover, of the 100 block of Haines Street, is charged with Attempted Murder, Assault on Law Enforcement, Aggravated Assault, Evading Arrest, and related offenses, authorities said.
